Sony’s Soneium Launches First Music NFT Collection in Partnership with Coop Records

by Jacob Ezra

Sony’s blockchain platform, Soneium, has officially debuted its first music NFT collection, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of digital music ownership and monetization. The collection, launched in partnership with on-chain record label Coop Records, features unreleased music from Tokyo-based producer NUU$HI and is now available on Soneium’s NFT marketplace, Sonova.

“In collaboration with Soneium, Coop Records is redefining music monetization models,” the platform announced on X (formerly Twitter).

The 22-minute-long music NFT is priced at 0.000777 ETH ($2.11), with 644 editions minted so far, according to the latest marketplace data.

Revolutionizing Music Monetization Through Blockchain

Coop Records, a community-owned, blockchain-based record label, has been at the forefront of integrating music with Web3. The label has moved over 600 songs on-chain, aiming to disrupt traditional music distribution models that often favor labels and streaming platforms over artists.

Founder Cooper Turley has been vocal about the transformative potential of blockchain for creators, stating last month:

“Crypto is finally entering the era where apps are the main focus. And with tokens at the center—creators and power users will be the biggest winners.”

This philosophy aligns with Soneium’s mission, which aims to build an ecosystem that ensures fair compensation and recognition for artists.

Soneium’s Vision for Fair Profit Distribution

As part of Sony Group’s blockchain initiatives, Soneium was developed to address key challenges in digital content distribution, including intellectual property protection and equitable revenue-sharing models.

Sony Block Solutions Labs, the conglomerate’s Singapore-based blockchain unit, has previously emphasized the importance of leveraging blockchain technology to safeguard creator-generated content and introduce innovative monetization structures.

Launched on January 14, 2025, Soneium operates as an Ethereum Layer 2 network, designed to enhance scalability and reduce transaction costs while supporting a broad range of entertainment applications.

“We are building the internet for entertainment … The next focus will be music,” Soneium Director and Startale CEO Sota Watanabe wrote on X.

Despite Sony Music Group’s ownership of major record labels such as Columbia Records and RCA Records, there has yet to be any formal integration between those labels and Soneium’s blockchain initiatives.

According to Soneium’s official network data, the blockchain has already accumulated over 248,000 accounts and recorded 1.9 million total addresses participating in its ecosystem.

As Web3 technology continues to reshape the music industry, Soneium’s NFT initiative represents a step toward empowering artists, creating new revenue streams, and offering fans a novel way to engage with digital music assets. With blockchain adoption expanding, the project could serve as a blueprint for the future of decentralized entertainment commerce.
